Rio Ferdinand EXCLUSIVE: Manchester United legend says Tottenham ‘just aren’t good enough’ to win Champions League
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand says he’d be “gobsmacked” if Tottenham don’t advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League – but insists they “aren’t good enough” to win the competition.Mauricio Pochettino’s men hold a three-goal lead over Borussia Dortmund heading into their last-16 second leg at the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday night.
3Mauricio Pochettino has made great progress with Tottenham – but is yet to win a trophy at White Hart LaneWith their Premier League title hopes now in tatters, Spurs’ only chance of silverware is winning Europe’s most elite competition. However, BT Sport pundit Ferdinand doesn’t believe they have what it takes to go all the way this season.Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, he said: “I’d be gobsmacked if they don’t go through against Dortmund.“They did the perfect job at Wembley. I was very impressed with them on the night.“Spurs don’t make it easy for themselves sometimes, but I don’t see them giving up the lead they have.“They don’t have the strength in depth required to be a serious contender in this competition though. They just aren’t good enough at the end of the day.
3Rio Ferdinand spoke exclusively to talkSPORT on a range of topics“If Tottenham came up against Liverpool and Man City in the later rounds, I’d back both of those teams to get the better of them over two legs.”Spurs recently became the first team in the Premier League era to go through two consecutive transfer windows without adding any fresh faces to their squad. The former England defender believes Pochettino is “producing miracles” with the north Londoners and feels the time will come where he will leave the club unless the board match his ambitions.“What other manager has done what he’s done in the top flight? What he’s doing is almost producing miracles,” the six-time Premier League winner explained.“Can you imagine what he’d be able to achieve if he was actually able to build on that success properly?“If he doesn’t get that financial backing long term then he’s not going to be happy is he?
3Ferdinand won six Premier League titles at Old Trafford during a glittering 12-year spell“If any human being feels they’re being held back in any way they won’t stand for that for a prolonged period of time.”He continued: “You can’t tell me Pochettino sits there and enjoys seeing other managers winning trophies who have been able to go out and spend 200m on a couple of players in any given transfer window.“When I was a player that’s what I lived for – the trophies.“It’s about being successful and winnings things at the end of the day. “He still hasn’t won anything there though, despite having a successful spell at the club.“If Pochettino got half of the money some of these other managers do to improve his team then he’d have a real chance of achieving something special at Spurs.“Any human will get to the point where they’ll say I’m going to take myself out of this situation and go to a team where I’ll get the opportunity to win on an even playing field.“They’ll suffer it for a little while, but not for years upon years.”
