Liverpool legend John Barnes has defended Mohamed Salah over the diving controversy that tainted their 4-0 win over Newcastle on Boxing Day.The Reds thumped the Magpies at Anfield to go six points clear at the top of the table.But most of the post-match talk was focused on a penalty incident involving Reds star Salah, who went to ground under minimal contact from Newcastle defender Paul Dummett.2

The referee whistled for a spot kick, which Salah dispatched for Liverpools second goal, but rival fans called for the Egyptian ace to be retrospectively banned for diving.A former Premier League referee also told talkSPORT he thought the Reds forward was guilty of simulation, but Salah was ultimately cleared of any offence.However, that hasnt stopped the debate from rumbling on.2

And Barnes has come to the defence of the Liverpool man, saying the law is wrong, not the player.In this day and age its a penalty, he told Fridays Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.Obviously when we played it wouldnt have been a penalty but that is where we have to look at the law.Im not a fan of the whole idea that if theres contract you go down in the penalty box. Im not a fan of that, however that is what the law says.So while I disagree with the law, I dont disagree with what Mo Salah did.In this day and age, if you feel any contract and you go down and its legitimate, then its a penalty.Im not a fan of that law so maybe we have to revisit that law, but at the moment that is what the law says, so it was a penalty.
