Manchester City starlet Phil Foden should be in England senior squad after Callum Hudson-Odoi call-up, says Micky Gray
Manchester City starlet Phil Foden should be given an opportunity in the senior England squad after Callum Hudson-Odois surprise call-up, says talkSPORT pundit Micky Gray.Chelsea youngster Hudson-Odoi received his first call-up to the England Under-21s squad last week, but was drafted into Gareth Southgates senior side on Monday after four players withdrew through injury. The 18-year-old, who has scored five goals in 19 games for the Blues this season, could make his full Three Lions debut in one of the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro which would make him Englands eighth youngest player.Hudson-Odoi could make his England debut against the Czech Republic or Montenegro2

But his move to the senior team has sparked a debate over giving away England caps to inexperienced players.Hudson-Odoi has played only 119 minutes of Premier League football for Chelsea this season. He has yet to start a league match and has played the majority of his games in the Europa League and cup competitions. However, ‘age doesn’t matter’ to former defender Gray, who believes Manchester City starlet Foden should also get a chance to prove himself at international level. The 18-year-old midfielder has experienced even less game time in the Premier League than Hudson-Odoi this season 98 minutes across ten substitute appearances but has six goals and two assists in 23 games in all competitions for City.Phil Foden is one of the most exciting prospects in English football2

If youre going to give people like Hudson-Odoi an opportunity in the England squad, I think Phil Foden is ready, Gray a three-cap England international told talkSPORT host Jim White.Ive always said, if a player is good enough they are ready, it doesnt matter what age they are.

I think thats the case with Hudson-Odoi, hes got incredible ability and hes got so much confidence.I just wish a few other young players were given the opportunity and the one who springs to mind to me is Foden. People have said to me in the past, he hasnt played enough for Manchester City, but I dont care about that anymore. These young guys are ready and they are not frightened when you put them in there.I hope he gets his opportunity, and I want to see other young players get their opportunity too, because the talent is there.
